Why is Poreč – one of the most visited cities in Croatia every year?
Poreč, or Parenzo, how local Croatian Italians call Poreč, is the second most inhabited city on the Istrian peninsula, right after Pula. Being settle on the western coast of Istria, it has a perfect climate and gorgeous landscapes typical for the lands of northern Adriatic coast. It is one of few cities you can encounter that had changed so many governances. In early history, it was under Roman rule and afterward under the Byzantine rule which left Poreč’s most recognizable monument – the Euphrasian Basilica inspired by the world-famous basilica in Ravenna. As time passed, so did the rulers of the city such as Napoleon and the Austro-Hungarian Empire during which Poreč marked itself as a popular tourist spot after the Austrian nobility started to sail nearby and have vacationed in the city. Following the popularization, Poreč got its famous Riviera in 1910. And started to open hotels and other forms of accommodation.
