Only a few minutes drive south of Dubrovnik lies ancient Roman settlement of Cavtat and the valley of Konavle-the very southernmost parts of Croatia. Both places have every right to called Croatian attractions so we decided to make a great day tour that takes you from a historic seaside village into the hidden interior of southernmost Croatia. Cavtat was founded by Romans as Epidaurus colony and its name came from latin expression Civitas Vetus. It’s past, present and future are closely tied to Dubrovnik’s and this historically rich area is a delight – its Old Town is a warren of narrow streets and cobbled alleys and it’s serpentine waterfront promenade that frames a picturesque harbor is much more than charming. But Cavtat is also known as a birthplace of one of the greatest Croatian artists – realistic painter -Vlaho Bukovac/ Biaggio Faggioni. Don’t miss his house, museum, and atelier in Cavtat.
After visiting Cavtat, we continue into the beautiful interior of the area known as the Konavle. Framed by the southern mountains of Herzegovina and Montenegro, its small population lives in 32 picturesque villages scattered across this south-easterly part of Croatia.
What makes Konavle Croatian Attraction?
It’s just the fact how its folk traditions and way of life have remained so intact. And today we get a rare opportunity to experience its signature culinary dish in an authentic village konoba deep in the hillside – the finest lamb slowly roasted under a thick iron pan covered in hot coals. Yours to savor with a glass of delicious local wine!
And there is great opportunity to see the only operating mill (Mlin or Mlinice) by the river Ljuta. The mill has been reconstructed to look exactly the same as it looks like more than 200 years ago. You’ll see also a presentation of the traditional production of making rough woolen cloth.
This day tour of Cavtat and Konavle will be remembered as one of many faces of Dubrovnik area – Afterward you will wonder is really possible to see something – so don’t miss it.
