Split is already 17 centuries old, dating to the time the Roman Emperor Diocletian decided to build his Palace right on the peninsula near the great Roman city Salona. Split is the second largest city on the Adriatic coast, the capital of Dalmatia and due to its suitable position, there is a significant harbor extremely important for this area. The vast monument represents a unique cultural heritage, and it is inscribed on UNESCO world heritage list which makes Split more exciting and recognizable in tourist guidebooks. We are talking about significant building for this region and worldwide, standing under the name of Diocletian’s Palace. It carries the title of Diocletian’s Palace because great Roman emperor Diocletian built it so he could rest there in the last years of his life.
It is well preserved and well maintained ancient palace in the world. Walking through the city streets, we experience the mixture of ancient Rome and Middle Ages. Split is well known for its delicious gastronomy, headquarter of the massive cultural events and must see the place on the Adriatic coast. Renovated Riva, a place where a lot of things are happening, has s wide selection of cafe bars, restaurants, and nightclubs.
If you are a sports lover and you want to get away from crowded places, you will climb Marjan hill, where a lot of locals exercise daily.
Grgur Ninski Statue and the Cathedral with Bell Tower of St. Domnius are also under UNESCO protection. There are many beaches so you can choose whether you want to go to a quieter place or crowdier spot with nice beach bars. If you visit Croatia for holidays and your first stop is Zagreb don’t miss the opportunity on your way to Split in a private car or minivan to see the most visited national park in Croatia- Plitvice Lakes.

En route (after 1,5 hour-drive), you will stop at Rastoke village waterfalls to enjoy the beauties of waterfalls.
The river Slunjčica flows into Korana river creating a beautiful sight of waterfalls, rapids, and lakes. Due to similar natural phenomena, Rastoke reminds us of “Plitvice Lakes National Park” and for that reason, they are often called “The small lakes of Plitvice.”
After Rastoke mills you’ll continue for an hour and a half of driving to Plitvice Lakes NP (arrival approx. at 11:30). The tour of the park usually takes about 3-4 hours.
Plitvice lakes are the biggest, most beautiful and most visited National park in Croatia. A multitude of cascades and bubbling waterfalls which are a perfect image of nature that has been built for more then thousand years.
