Zagreb’s Upper town consists of two hills Gradec (also known as Grič), as civil and Kaptol that was from the day first under bishop jurisdiction. People from those two hills fought for a long time and finally united in one city under the name of Zagreb. Everything between this two hills is the upper town which is full of small streets where you can find the variety of amazing restaurants and café bars for every taste particularly attractive to tourists. Definitely most distinctive part of upper town is the square around St. Mark’s Church which is one of the oldest monuments in Zagreb special for its Gothic with Romanesque architectural style. Church dates from 13th century expect for its roof which is recognizable because it’s colorfully tiled representing the coat of arms of Zagreb (white castle on red background) and Triune Kingdom of Croatia, Slavonia, and Dalmatia. Other significant places on St. Mark’s Square are St. Mark’s parish office interesting because it’s here since the 16th century and Banski dvori. Part of St. Mark’s Square is the seat of Croatian Parliament. Lotršćak Tower is a fortified tower and cannon fires every day at noon so you can hear it even if you are located somewhere in lower town. If you love art, you should definitely visit Croatian Gallery of Naïve art and The Klovićevi Dvori Gallery which will surely complete your tour. Just by walking through Upper town, you feel like you are on a free historical route through city’s past with lots of beautiful sights worth seeing.
On Kaptol hill – definitely, the most interesting monument is The Cathedral (see more at The Cathedral of Zagreb).
The Blue Funicular connects Upper and Lower Town is surely the shortest funicular in the world, with a track of only 66 meters. The funicular officially started on October 8th, 1890. and it is protected as a cultural monument, one of the tourist attractions in Zagreb.
