C for Coffee! C for Croatia!
Let’s have a coffee – it’s just a term for socializing
Coffee? Or just a break? Whenever and wherever!
When you want to meet someone in Croatia, the best way to say; Let’s have a coffee or in Croatian; idemo na kavu!
Walking through the streets of Zagreb you will hardly not notice numerous coffee shops with their enchanting terraces filled with people of all ages enjoying their coffee and soaking up the sun. Having a coffee hardly has anything to do with the coffee itself. It is a way of life, a cultural gesture and a kind of hedonism you’ll get so easily attached to. The tradition of socializing through coffee isn’t a recent trend unknown to this areas. The whole culture lies in Croatia’s rich history influenced by the Ottoman Empire on the East and the traditional coffee place culture in Vienna from the West. Both cultures had a strong social point in drinking coffee with other people in terms of bonding with each other and Zagreb as a city in between was a logic next step in Zagreb’s cultural shift.Over the centuries, people have been attached to coffee in so many ways while growing up that many foreigners to this days are still surprised how important role it plays in our lives.
The reason why there are so many coffee places is because those are the places where people meet and exchange gossip, go on dates and discuss business.
Unlike in the most of the world, it is completely normal to drink coffee in Zagreb throughout the whole day, even in evening, and while visiting someone at home in Zagreb, be sure to buy them the popular „brick“ of coffee wrapped in white paper as a gesture of thanking someone for inviting you to their home. And if you find yourself in the center of Zagreb during Saturday forenoon, be sure to look your best because that’s the time when the whole city puts up their best outfits for showing off and enjoy relaxing gossip on the sunny coffee terraces of beautiful Zagreb.
